To a large extend, Contemporary Aid Organizations seek to assist a family by identifying their child or children and affording them education in a school or an institution. This form of assistance while well meaning, detaches the family  and the principles of responsibilities where the man-or woman being the head of the family loses respect from the rest of the family members because they see him/her as a non-provider. Most of Donor and Sponsoring organization mainly concern themselves in assisting individual children, by either paying their School fees, providing some money for their upkeep and buying clothes for them. When looked at critically, this method of assistance only goes a short distance because it only helps one child, in a family of 6 or seven. The rest of the siblings are left wondering why not them.

Ours was to find a way through which the whole family is assisted through the parents or guardian, thus ensuring that the assistance will spread through out the family. By going in and sitting down with the whole family, identifying their areas of need and assisting them as per their needs, we are able to maintain some dignity and respect within the family. A child will grow up knowing that her father or mother was part and parcel of their education process because they also help in their education.

PROJECTS

Primary education is free in Kenya as from January 2003; there are many instances where children do not go to school because of certain levies, school uniforms, books, desks and food.

Our sponsorship programme at Primary School levels aims at offering  assistance to children from poor families by seeking funds to  cater for some of these education requirements which otherwise act as impediments to children accessing education.

Secondary Education in the country is payable although the government as of January 2008 has offered subsidized  Tuition assistance to Boarding School thus making it almost Free in the limited day school, the costs are exorbitant. Many parents who can not afford to pay for the boarding charges are left struggling to make ends meet while the wealthy families take up all the best positions in both public and private school. We usually seek sponsorships for poor families whose children are in both day and boarding schools with aim of fending off manipulations by the wealthy in the country.

Education in Kenya

Sponsorships

Sponsorship:

for Bright but Poor Children in Primary classes 6, 7 and 8

In Kenya, every beginning of the year is a nightmare for poor families whose children had undertaken the end of Primary school exam (KCPE). Parents desperately seek assistance to afford their children limited secondary school placements after this EXAM. Most of these children do well but cannot afford the high fees charged by the secondary schools. The prospects of loosing the secondary school opportunity due to fees and limited places drive parents to depressions. Due to limited places, Secondary School heads can only keep the placement pledge for a limited time frame, and then offer the same to wiling and affording parents thus poor children sacrificed under financial drives.

Our scholarships to bright children from poor families in the afore mentioned classes ensure that these children are well prepared psychologically as they prepare for the end of Primary exams, knowing that once they do well, they will have a guarantee in secondary school. Parents are also encouraged to plan early for the education of their children instead of waiting till the last minute.

Sponsorship for Bright Girls

When faced with demands for school provisions, most poor parents tend to sacrifice their girl children to save the boys. Girls are made to stay home to look after their younger siblings while the parents go seeking employments. Sometimes girls are made to work for family economic gains

We seek to offer scholarships to families of girls who do well in primary classes 5,6,7 and 8 through our sponsorship programmes,  so that they can be able to continue with education instead of dropping out of school. This sponsorship is continued through to secondary school after successful completion of the KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education)

School Feeding Programme:

Most children from poor families here in Kenya live on one meal a day and sometimes none at all. Hungry children cannot be expected to grasp any knowledge no matter how good a teacher they have.

Our Community based feeding Centers are run by some of the parents, where they volunteer cooking the food while Afrika Awake Provides the food and other materials. We seek to  offer these desperate children a chance for a decent meal and an opportunity to attend class in the afternoon with energy and vigor. Some of these Centers are the only opportunity for a meal for most of these children especially the orphans.

(The government and the WFP programmes only offer limited opportunity and cover small areas).
